Biomarkers in Growth

Abstract: Background: The current approaches to assess growth are limited to anthropometry, are insensitive and nonspecific, and do not enable an improved understanding of how nutrition might impact growth. Consequently, new tools to develop better standards of care and programs to address ongoing concerns about nutrition and health are needed. Methods: The Biomarkers of Nutrition for Development (BOND) project is designed to support the discovery, development, and use of current and new biomarkers of nutritional exposu… Show more

“…However, many other growth factors and intracellular and extracellular matrix proteins are also critical to regulate cellular activity, providing structural and biochemical support for local tissue growth ( 6 , 7 ). In addition to hormonal and local control, growth and body composition of growing children living in impoverished areas are likely to be affected by a complex interplay between nutrient metabolism and the immune and neurologic systems ( 8 ). Thus, the global discovery mode of plasma proteomics may help to advance our understanding of dynamic structural or regulatory mechanisms of tissue growth associated with nutritional or other environmental exposures.…”

“…The existing method to evaluate child growth is limited to anthropometric measurement which is not always useful to reflect the accurate role of nutritional supplementation in improving growth (Raiten et al, 2013 ). Instruments are expensive, are of poor sensitivity and nonspecific for detecting impaired growth in nutritionally disadvantaged populations.…”

“…Measuring children's weight and height have several advantages due to noninvasiveness and available accepted standards. However, these are limited by lower sensitivity and accuracy and unlikely to provide appropriate warning with a decrease in growth unless conducted over a prolonged period of time (Harkare et al, 2021 ; Raiten et al, 2013 ). Indeed, anthropometry alone is insufficient to predict specific differences in patterns between children growing normally and those who are malnourished.…”

“…34 As the goals of food assistance shift from simply preventing death to promoting well-being, our metrics need to tell us whether food assistance programs are contributing to more productive individuals and societies. 30,35 Three priority areas for food assistance outcome measures beyond z scores were identified during the Evidence Summit: body composition, brain health, and gut health. Examples of each are outlined subsequently; however, further research and testing are needed to determine the most useful and feasible field indicators in each category.…”
