Biomarkers for Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Abstract: The hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common malignant tumors and carries a poor survival rate. The management of patients at risk for developing HCC remains challenging. Increased understanding of cancer biology and technological advances have enabled identification of a multitude of pathological, genetic, and molecular events that drive hepatocarcinogenesis leading to discovery of numerous potential biomarkers in this disease. They are currently being aggressively evaluated to establi… Show more

“…Normal concentrations of AFP in adult serum are ≤ 20 ng/mL. AFP can increase temporarily in cases of liver injury or regeneration, particularly after liver resection, during fulminant viral hepatitis, or chronic viral hepatitis [18,19] . Patients with chronic hepatitis or cirrhosis and persistently elevated AFP levels are at higher risk of developing HCC [2022] .…”

“…The accuracy of abdominal ultrasound is highly dependent on the operator's experience, while computed tomography is expensive and also its feasibility dependents on patients' compliance. Traditional biomarkers, such as alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), have limited clinical value in predicting prognosis and metastasis (Behne and Copur 2012;Forner and Bruix 2012). Thus, it is essential to identify new specific tumor biomarkers, especially for early stage tumors.…”

“…The development of biomarkers for the early diagnosis and accurate prognosis of HCC is crucial for improving patient survival. Various tissue and serum potential biomarkers including AFP-L3, DCP, AFP, and hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) are involved in HCC (13).…”
