a b s t r a c tThe concentration changes of 12 metals (As, Hg, Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Pb, Mn, Ni, V, Zn, Fe, and Hg) in the soft tissues of Tapes philippinarum during growth were investigated. Clams were seeded in two contaminated areas of the Venice lagoon (San Giuliano and Fusina) and in an area of the Marano lagoon (Lignano Sabbiadoro) close to the clam-farm where the seed was produced. Metal trends were very different according to the considered element, the study site and the growth period. Arsenic was always higher in clam tissues than in surface sediments and suspended particles in all the three stations. Mercury, Cd and Cu were higher in the clams from Marano and Fusina but not in those from San Giuliano. Zinc and Co in clams exceeded the concentrations in the sediment and suspended particles only at Marano. The other elements (Cr, Pb, Mn, Ni, and Fe) were always higher in SPM and sediments. In general metal concentrations in clams were more highly correlated to concentrations in the suspended particles rather than in the surface sediments and in suspended clams rather than in bottom clams, nevertheless significant differences between stations and contaminants were found. Metal concentrations in clams were always lower than the European regulatory limits.Published by Elsevier Ltd.

The chloragogenous tissue and the intestinal epithelium of adult earthworms, Lumbricus terrestris, sampled from sites with and without volcanic activity in the Azores were submitted to hematoxylin/eosin staining, autometallography and TUNEL-test in order to quantify the radial thickness of both tissues, their relative abundance of metals and apoptosis levels. Metals were visualized, through light microscopy, as black silver deposits (BSD) mostly in the chloragogenous tissue. The lowest radial thickness values of both tissues were found in the active volcanic sites, as well as the highest BSD and apoptosis levels. The BSD extent in the chloragogenous tissue, semi-quantified by stereology, exhibited a positive correlation with the apoptosis levels and a negative one with the radial thickness of both tissues. Thus, the variation of the radial thickness of both tissues, but especially of the chloragogenous tissue, which could reflect different cellular turnover rates caused by exposure to metals, is suggested as a biomarker of effect for metal exposure in terrestrial worms inhabiting volcanic environments.

The study was carried out to check the water contamination in two sites of Ria Formosa Lagoon by assessing the damage responses versus protection in the gills and digestive gland (Dg) of mussels--Mytilus galloprovincialis Lmk. Damage was assessed as DNA integrity and lipid peroxidation (LPO) while protection was evaluated by measuring catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR), glutathione S-transferase (GST), total glutathione (GSHt) and metallothioneins (MT). Mussels were collected in March of 2007 at Ramalhete (R) as a reference site and Faro port (F) as harbour area. Cross transplantation was from R to F and vice versa performed during 0, 3 and 6 days. Gills DNA integrity decrease was observed in mussels transplanted to F (3 days) and R (6 days). Highest Dg LPO was found in mussels sampled at R. Elevated gills CAT, GPx, GR and GST was observed in mussels transplanted to F. Dg GSHt decreased in mussels transplanted to F. Gills and Dg mussels MT increased in mussels transplanted to R. M. galloprovincialis responses show their capability as early warning signals of the contaminants presence. The adopted approach, considering simultaneously protection responses and damaging effects, also revealed its usefulness on the pollution assessment.
