Biomarker Characterization and Prediction of Virulence and Antibiotic Resistance from Helicobacter pylori Next Generation Sequencing Data

Abstract: The Gram-negative bacterium Helicobacter pylori colonizes c.a. 50% of human stomachs worldwide and is the major risk factor for gastric adenocarcinoma. Its high genetic variability makes it difficult to identify biomarkers of early stages of infection that can reliably predict its outcome. Moreover, the increasing antibiotic resistance found in H. pylori defies therapy, constituting a major human health problem. Here, we review H. pylori virulence factors and genes involved in antibiotic resistance, as well as… Show more

“…The presence of mutations in genes that are known to be associated with CD provided evidence that microbiota play a part in the pathogenesis of the illness. This might be accomplished by a change in the immune response, mucosal permeability, or the metabolic products of microbes [48][49][50][51][52]. Antibiotics and probiotics are two examples treatments targeting bacteria, and there has been a recent increase of the use of both approaches.…”

“…Тому в багатьох державах Європи та Америки розроблено стандарти лікування інфекції H.pylori у хворих на виразкову хворобу [7,8]. Елімінація мікроорганізмів із шлункової слизової оболонки значно знижує частоту виникнення ускладнень виразкової хвороби [9]. Однак практичний досвід показує, що антихелікобактерна терапія супроводжується у частини хворих виникненням несприятливих побічних реакцій.…”

“…The outer membrane porins (Hop) or Hop-related proteins (Hor) are responsible for the transport of various molecules, including antibiotics, by passive diffusion. The adhesins SabA and BabA bind epithelial cells; the iron-regulated outer membrane proteins, which include the FecA- and FrpB-like proteins, bind heme and hemoglobin; the efflux pump outer membrane proteins, which expel various molecules from the bacterial cytoplasm; the Hof and Hom families, which are involved in adhesion to gastric cells [ 27 , 28 ].…”
