Biology, population built up and damage potential of Red spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) on marigold: A review

Abstract: Marigold (Tagetus sp.) is a commercially exploited flower crop and is having a prominent place in ornamental horticulture. Agriculture is having a large impact on human economics and the emergence of red spider mite, Tetranychus urticae as a serious pest of marigold is a major concern. It leads to an economic yield reduction in crops depending on cropping seasons and agro-climatic conditions. Once it is established in an area, it is hard to get rid of it due to its high fecundity, dispersal techniques, short l… Show more

“…findings corroborate the earlier findings which reported that in a greenhouse brinjal crop, T. urticae infestation resulted in a reduction of 28.08, 20.53 and 14.37 per cent in yield, fruit weight and number of fruits per plant, respectively(Bamel and Gulat, 2021) Ghongade et al (2022). found that T. urticae can cause yield loss from 7.4 to 53.3 per cent depending on the stage at which mite has initiated infestation on Cucumis sativus Linnaeus.…”

“…In Punjab, 18.14 per cent avoidable crop loss was reported in brinjal due to tetranychid mites (Anonymous, 2012). Previous literature also indicates damage caused by mites (Jimenez, 2014;Kumar et al, 2013;Tehri, 2014;Jayasingha and Malik 2015;Bamel and Gulat, 2021). However, there are no detailed studies on losses caused by mites on this crop in India.…”

“…The population of T.urtiace was distributed during the months of the growing Nile seasons and the population of pest recorded two peaks during July and August (Shaalan, 2016). Abo-Elmaged et al (2020) Egypt, recorded the highest peak of T. urticae population the middle of May on cucumber, while Bamel et al (2021) who showed that T. urticae population recorded peak on third week of May. Bouchelta and Allam (2023) showed that, infestation peaks occurred in March and declined later in October.…”
