“…To examine the immature stages and life history of smaller species, rearing‐based methods are better suited than field studies. The Laccophilus rearing method was introduced by Watanabe (2021a), and several species have been successfully reared and reproduced with this method (Watanabe 2020, 2021b; Watanabe & Kamite 2020). The rearing‐based method is suitable for a comparison between closely related species, because it is possible to rear target species under the same environmental conditions.…”

“…They were brought to a rearing room maintained at 26°C under conditions of 9 h light (8:15 a.m. to 5:15 p.m., Japan Standard Time) and 15 h dark (LD 9:15) in the Ishikawa Insect Museum (Hakusan, Japan) on October 21, 2020. The rearing method of Watanabe (2021a) was followed, and after more than 2 months, they did not lay eggs; therefore, the egg‐laying substrate was changed to Ludwigia sp., on December 28, 2020. Photographs were captured using a Nikon D500 digital camera, equipped with a Laowa 25 mm f/2.8 2.5–5× Ultra Macro lens.…”

“…It should be noted that the developmental periods of the 19 Dytiscidae species presented by Kingsley (1985) are based on literature and not on uniform conditions. The larval periods of several Dytiscidae species have been examined under the same temperature conditions as the present study thereafter (e.g., Watanabe 2020aWatanabe , 2020bWatanabe , 2021. No Dytiscidae species previously documented has a shorter developmental period than E. sticticus.…”

“…The elucidation of life histories and immature stages will not only contribute to the taxonomy and phylogenetics of this species, but will also improve aquatic biodiversity conservation (e.g. Ohba 2009;Watanabe et al 2017aWatanabe et al , 2020Watanabe 2021).…”
