Biology of milk thistle (Silybum marianum) and the management options for growers in north‐western Pakistan

Abstract: Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) is cultivated as a medicinal plant but it also can be a troublesome weed. It is an annual or biennial herb that prefers high rainfall and fertile soils. Milk thistle has become a widespread weed in north-western Pakistan, where it causes yield reductions Յ37% in wheat and poses harvesting problems due to its thorny nature. Shortcomings in cultural practises, such as a low crop seed rate, wide row spacing, broadcast fertilizer, and limited crop rotation have contributed to milk t… Show more

“…The increasing worldwide demand for silymarin is endangering the sparse populations of S. marianum in the Mediterranean region (Ahmad et al 2008). Moreover, knowledge of yield and chemical composition is limited (Khan et al 2009). The present study was directed towards medium components and conditions alterations wishing better silymarin yield.…”

“…The increasing worldwide demand for silymarin is endangering the sparse populations of S. marianum in the Mediterranean region (Ahmad et al 2008). Moreover, knowledge of yield and chemical composition is limited (Khan et al 2009). The efficiency of seed germination and seedling growth in some species of Asteraceae is low, inconsistent, and is highly dependent on various biological and environmental factors (Abbasi et al 2010a, b).…”

“…comm.). In order to reduce milk thistle biomass, grazing by goat has been suggested for non-crop areas (Khan et al, 2009).However, milk thistle is considered a weed in sowed annual legume pastures (Sulas et al, 2008), waste areas, cereal crops, decreasing wheat yields (Khan et al, 2009), and along roadsides (Karkanis et al, 2011).Milk thistle is a medicinal plant cultivated in agriculture. It is the most researched plant for the treatment of liver disease.…”

“…Both are winter annual with luxurious rapid growth (Young et al, 1978;Austin et al, 1988;Groves and Kaye, 1989). Being a major weed in wheat it causes considerable yield reduction (Omtvedt, 1984;Khan and Marwat, 2006;Shimi et al, 2006). Although its management through herbicides is easier than grassy weeds but species shift as well as herbicide-resistance may be created (Bhowmik and Inderjit, 2003).…”
