To identify Cd- and Zn-accumulating plants exhibiting a high growth rate, seeds from the halophyte species Mediterranean saltbush (Atriplex halimus L.) were collected on a heavy-metal-contaminated site in southeastern Spain (Llano del Beal, Cartagena). Seedlings from this ecotype were exposed for 3 wk to 0.1 mM Cd or Zn in a nutrient solution in a fully controlled environment. All plants remained alive and no significant growth inhibition was recorded until the end of the experiment. Mean Cd and Zn accumulation in aerial parts was 830 and 440 mg kg(-1), respectively, and the rate of metal translocation even increased with the duration of stress exposure. Resistance to heavy metals in this species may be partly linked to precipitation of Cd in oxalate crystals in the stems. A Cd-induced decrease in glutathione concentration also suggests that phytochelatins overproduction may occur in these conditions. We conclude that Mediterranean saltbush, which is able to produce up to 5 Mg dry matter ha(-1) yr(-1), may be an effective species for phytoextraction and should be tested for this purpose in field conditions.

A synopsis of the genus Atriplex L. (Chenopodiaceae) in Saudi Arabia

The genus Atriplex L. is revised from Saudi Arabia. In all 10 species are reported, out of which seven are native (Atriplex coriacea, A. dimorphostegia, A. farinosa, A glauca, A. halimus, A. leucoclada and A. tatarica), and three are introduced and cultivated/naturalised (A. canescens, A. semibaccata and A. suberecta). The study has introduced the presences of following new taxa: Atriplex dimorphostegia f. collenettea Al‐Turki, Omer & A. Ghafoor f. nova, and Atriplex leucoclada var. mandavillea Al‐Turki, Omer & A.Ghafoor var. nova. Status and history of genera segregated from Atriplex has been discussed. A key for identification of taxa recognized and their descriptions are given; notes on nomenclature, variation pattern, ecology, distribution maps, local names and uses are provided. A list of introduced and cultivated species is appended.

Diversas atividades humanas podem trazer como consequência à degradação do solo. Na pecuária destaca-se o processo do curtimento do couro como atividade potencialmente degradatória, pela deposição dos resíduos nas diferentes etapas, iniciadas com a salga que gera uma água residuária de elevada carga orgânica, geralmente depositada nas áreas do entorno dos matadouros. Buscar mecanismos para minimizar o impacto causado ao solo pela atividade é imprescindível, sendo a possibilidade do uso de plantas tolerantes aos elevados níveis de salinização uma importante estratégia de fitorremediação, a exemplo da erva sal (Atriplex nummularia L.). A pesquisa objetivou verificar o impacto da irrigação com água residuária de curtume no crescimento inicial da erva sal e realizar diagnóstico preliminar do solo da área de descarte de salmoura. Foi realizado um estudo de caso e uma pesquisa de campo em Sumé (PB), que constou da caracterização do solo da área e do estabelecimento das mudas de erva sal, irrigada com diferentes diluições (100%, 50%, 20%, 4,0% e 0,8% de salmoura). As mudas de atriplex foram plantadas em vasos de 5L, usando um Luvissolos, sem adição de matéria orgânica. Os resultados da análise do solo indicaram que os atributos químicos do solo da área de deposição da salga do couro apresentam teores de sódio, matéria orgânica e condutividade elétrica elevados no local e no entorno e que houve acréscimo dos teores de sais no solo dos vasos, sobretudo naqueles que receberam irrigação com 100%, 50% e 20% de salmoura (Na 161,7 - 91,3 - 22,6 cmolc dm-3 e CE 21,13 - 14,42 - 10,5 dS m-1 respectivamente). Embora com reduzido tempo de cultivo, foi possível evidenciar que a Atriplex nummularia apresentou potencialidades de expressiva tolerância ao desenvolvimento em solos de áreas contaminadas pela salinidade da salga de couro, respondendo ao incremento de salinidade da água de irrigação quando se consideram o aumento de produção de biomassa e do sistema radicular.
