Higher education biology is often imagined, perceived, and described as having reached gender equality in terms of who gets to participate in disciplinary practices. However, like any other natural science discipline, higher education biology is a world whose landscapes are shaped by (re)productions of historical, cultural, and social norms. We explore these norms through the lens of identity, asking what identities are recognized by university biology teachers at a large Swedish university, analyzing 94 teaching statements written when applying for faculty positions in biology. We argue that in and through teaching statements, university biology teachers negotiate and perform overarching academic and disciplinary norms and discourses with the goal to present themselves as intelligible candidates. As statements of value, they thereby display implicit and explicit identities recognized in worlds of higher education biology. Using a discourse analytical framework, we identified two university teacher identities imagined as intelligible: Research Science Teachers and Facilitating Science Teachers.Research Science Teachers position research and associated masculine-coded competences as anchor points

Problem Roulette (PR), an online study service at the University of Michigan, offers point-free practice to students preparing for examinations in introductory STEM courses. Using four years of PR data involving millions of problem attempts by thousands of students, we quantify benefits of increased practice study volume in introductory physics. After conditioning mean final grade on standardized (ACT/SAT) math test score, we analyze deviations based on student study volume. We find a strong effect; mean course grade rises quadratically with the logarithm of the total number of PR questions encountered over the term (N Q,tot ), with an overall gain of 0.78 ± 0.12 grade points between 1 < N Q,tot < 1000. The gains are persistent across the range of math test score represented in our sample. A linear model for final grade using test score and study volume largely accounts for demographic stratification, including by sex, parental education level, number of parents at home, nationality / underrepresented minority status, and regional income level, with two significant exceptions: students whose parents did not earn a college degree, who earn −0.27 ± 0.04 grade points (6.2σ ) below expectations and underrepresented minority students at −0.14±0.04 points (3.7σ ). Residual scatter in final grade remains comparable to the maximum gain from studying more, implying that the model is far from deterministic at the level of an individual. Our findings can help motivate students to study more and help teachers to identify which types of students may especially need such encouragement.

In university mathematics education, students do not simply learn mathematics but are shaped and shape themselves into someone new—mathematicians. In this study, we focus on the becoming of disabled mathematical subjects. We explore the importance of abilities in the processes of being and becoming in university mathematics. Our interest lies in how teaching and assessment practices provide students with ways to understand themselves as both able and disabled, as disabilities are only understood with respect to the norm. We analyse narratives of nine university students diagnosed with learning disabilities or mental health issues to investigate how their subjectivity is constituted in discourse. Our analysis shows how the students are shaped and shape themselves as disabled mathematicians in relation to speed in mathematical activities, disaffection in mathematics, individualism in performing mathematics, and measurability of performance. These findings cast light on the ableist underpinnings of the teaching and assessment practices in university mathematics education. We contend that mathematical ableism forms a watershed for belonging in mathematics learning practices, constituting rather narrow, “normal” ways of being “mathematically able”. We also discuss how our participants challenge and widen the idea of an “able” mathematics student. We pave the way for more inclusive futures of mathematics education by suggesting that rather than understanding the “dis” in disability negatively, the university mathematics education communities may use dis by disrupting order. Perhaps, we ask, if university mathematics fails to enable accessible learning experiences for students who care about mathematics, these practices should indeed be disrupted.
