The population dynamics and secondary production of the wedge clam Donax trunculus were studied in the Gulf of Annaba (Northeast Algeria) monthly for one year at a site close to the Annaba port and the Seybouse river, affected by industrial and agricultural pollution (Sidi Salem), and at a site more distant from major pollution sources, but exploited by fishery (Echatt). The number of individuals (N) was lower at Sidi Salem (36–148 ind m-2) than at Echatt (63–272 ind m-2) in most sampling dates, while the biomass was more variable from one date to another, with no consistent pattern of differences between sites. The condition index (CI), although slightly higher at Sidi Salem than at Echatt, showed at both sites a major increase in March/April, June/July and October, reflecting two main periods of gonads development and increase in the level of stored reserves at the end of the reproductive period. Consistently, the recruitment of D. trunculus ran from April to October with a major peak of abundance in spring and a minor one in early fall. The maximum age of D. trunculus was 3 years and the growth rate was highest in the first year. Annual somatic production (P) was lower at Sidi Salem (0.773 g AFDM m-2 yr-1) than at Echatt (1.262 g AFDM m-2 yr-1), possibly reflecting a lower mean annual biomass at Sidi Salem (1.642 AFDM m-2) than at Echatt (3.046 AFDM m-2), while the annual P/B ratio was similar between the two sites (i.e. 0.471 and 0.414 yr-1, respectively). Lower N and P at Sidi Salem compared to Echatt are consistent with the proximity of Sidi Salem to the industrial port of Annaba and low hydrodynamic conditions which may favor the accumulation of pollutants, such as hydrocarbons. On the other hand, moderate secondary production of D. trunculus at Echatt compared to other Mediterranean sites may be due to excessive harvesting. We suggest that the low secondary production described in this study should be taken into account for the development of sustainable strategies of clam exploitation in the Gulf of Annaba. In particular, effort should be made to reduce land-based pollution and to regulate the collection of D. trunculus according to the life cycle and production potential of this species.

Foi avaliada a proporção sexual e determinado o tamanho da concha, quando da primeira maturação sexual de uma população de Donax hanleyanus Philippi, 1847, amostrada durante 15 meses, entre outubro de 2001 e dezembro de 2002, na praia de Arroio Teixeira, sul do Brasil. Aproximadamente, 3000 espécimes foram coletados na zona de varrido, com comprimento de concha igual ou superior a 2,0 mm. A análise histológica foi realizada em 347 espécimes, entre 7,0 e 28,33 mm de comprimento de concha. A proporção sexual é de 1:1. Os diferentes métodos utilizados, para determinação do tamanho da primeira maturação sexual, resultaram em comprimentos aproximados, podendo-se concluir que Donax hanleyanus atinge a maturidade em um comprimento médio de concha entre 12,28 e 12,60 mm. Sugere-se que o comprimento mínimo de captura seja estabelecido em 15,0 mm.

1. The wedge clam, Donax trunculus (Linnaeus, 1758), is an ecologically and economically important species found in the warm waters of the Atlantic and Mediterranean areas. Donax trunculus has been suffering from a severe population decline in some wild stocks of the Iberian Peninsula, and genetic monitoring of wild populations can provide valuable information to support conservation measures and management policies.2. In this study, mitochondrial 16S rDNA (16S) and cytochrome b (Cytb) gene variation was examined at 18 localities across the Iberian Peninsula to test whether the patterns of genetic diversity, population structure, and demographic inferences previously deduced by using microsatellites are supported by these molecular markers. 3. Samples (N = 557) were collected from 18 localities of the Iberian Peninsula and attention was paid to the north-western Atlantic area, where wild stocks have diminished greatly. Analysis of molecular variance, fixation index ( F ST ), and demographic inferences were estimated based on mitochondrial DNA. Since D. trunculus shows doubly uniparental inheritance, both types of mitochondrial DNA (F and M) were analysed. 4. A high level of genetic diversity was detected using the haplotype diversity dataset, showing different geographic patterns. 5. F ST values for the M type revealed significant differentiation between populations on both sides of the Almeria-Oran front, and between the locality from the Alboran Sea (FU) and localities from the Atlantic Ocean. However, the F type did not detect the differentiation of FU. This makes the M genome sequences more suitable for investigating genetic structure of D. trunculus populations. 6. Management and recovering strategies of this important resource should consider the genetic structure observed. 7. Several strategies for conservation and management of this commercial and ecologically important bivalve are proposed. * Both authors contributed equally to this work.
