Biology and management of Plodia interpunctella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) in stored products

Abstract: Plodia interpunctella (Hu¨bner), the Indian meal moth, is a worldwide insect pest of stored-products and processed food commodities. It can infest a variety of products and is perhaps the most economically important insect pest of processed food. In this review, we summarize the biology of P. interpunctella, discuss oviposition and development in relation to temperature, environment and food source, examine studies involving sampling and detection, describe various aspects of integrated control, summarize the … Show more

“…P. interpunctella larvae can invade packaged foods and feed on a wide diversity of foods such as cereals, nuts, dried fruits, and some spices (Na and Ryoo 2000;Sauer and Shelton 2002;PerezMendoza and Aguilera-Peña 2004). Current pest management of the stored foods/grains has depended on the use of chemicals, such as chlorfluazuron and methyl bromide (Mohandassa et al 2007;Ebadollahi et al 2010). Methyl bromide is commonly used fumigant in the management of the stored-product pests.…”

“…In some rural areas of Iran that use traditional storages, damage caused by stored product insects can be as high as 80% (Modarres-Najafabadi et al, 2006). P. interpunctella (Hübner) (Indian meal moth) is considered to be the most troublesome of the moths infesting stored products in the world (Phillips et al, 2000;Mohandass et al, 2007). It attacks all cereal products, whole grains, dried fruits, pet foods, birdseed, dried milk and nuts (Arthur et al, 1991).…”
