The blue swimming crab (BSC), Portunus pelagicus (Linnaeus 1758), inhabits coastal areas of Southeast and East Asia, and is one of high fisheries commodity with export value for Indonesia and global market demand increasing annually. However, the data of genetic diversity and their spatial connectivity of populations in Indonesia are not yet known, which is important to inform unit stock management and sustainable fisheries. This study aimed to determine genetic diversity and differentiation of blue swimming crab across Indonesia populations under different Fishery Management Area, and their spatial genetic connectivity, as well as implications for sustainable fishery. A total of 297 individuals were amplified using cytochrome oxidase I mitochondrial DNA. This study shown highest value of haplotype and nucleotide diversity in the eastern part of Indonesia, where exploitation is relatively low. Significant genetic differentiation between populations (FST = 0.954; p < 0.001) and the fishery management regions (FST = 0.964; p < 0.001) were revealed. Low spatial connectivity was observed between populations in a distance of at least more than 60 kilometers. This study suggests that BSC populations in Indonesia likely have several unit stock, and preferably different fisheries management plan and action across the region thoroughly and simultaneously is effective for management and their sustainable conservation.

The increase in fuel prices will gradually have an impact on the capture fisheries sub-sector, especially the fishermen. Sail technology is an alternative that can be used to save fuel oil, although it is realized that this technology cannot completely replace the diesel motor that is commonly used in fishing operations. This study will explain the application opportunities of sail technology on fishing vessels for blue swimming crab (Portunus pelagicus) in the deep waters of the Java Sea. This fishing ground is more than 12 nautical miles from the coast. Using sail technology on fishing vessels is very dependent on the characteristics of wind speed and direction. This discussion explores the relationship between the west and east monsoons in the Java Sea with the direction of fishing trip. Technological difficulties and current challenge in sail technology on fishing vessel for blue swimming crab are identified. The possible ideas for future research in this field are also discussed.

Reproductive Biology of Coral Catshark Atelomycterus marmoratus (Anonymous [Bennett], 1830) in Seribu Islands, Indonesia

This study provides information on the reproductive biology of the coral catshark caught in the waters around Seribu Islands, Indonesia. A total of 257 coral catsharks were collected from February 2017 to January 2018. The total length of coral catshark ranged from 170 to 585 mm for females and 255-575 mm for males, respectively. The total weight of females ranged from 85 to 640 g and males from 100 to 620 g The sex ratio between females and males was 0.45 and it was not significantly different from the expected 1:1 ratio. The growth pattern of coral catsharks in Seribu Island was negatively allometric and the population was dominated by mature sharks. The mean size at first maturity was estimated to be 557 mm for females and 514 mm for males, based on to the relationship between the proportion between maturity stage and total length. The ovulation season was estimated occur from October to March, whereas September to April was mating season based on monthly variations of gonadosomatic index (GSI) values and the occurrence of egg cases in uterus.
