The deterministic maintenance of clonal diversity in thelytokous taxa can be seen as a model for understanding how environmental heterogeneity both can stabilize genetic diversity and can allow coexistence of competing species. We here analyze the temporal fluctuations in clonal diversity in the thelytokous Lonchopterid fly, Dipsa bifurcata (Fallé n, 1810), at four localities in Sweden over an 8-year period. Estimated fitness values for clones are cyclical, synchronous among populations and correlated with seasonal changes in the environment. Differential winter viability and emergence from overwintering along with differential reproductive rate during the summer appear to be the selective mechanisms by which long-term clonal diversity is maintained. In a companion paper (Tomiuk et al, 2004), we present a model for the maintenance of clonal diversity through the mechanism of differential diapause among clones, utilizing fitness values estimated from the data presented here. In general, our results imply that fluctuating seasonal fitnesses can maintain stable genetic polymorphism within populations, as well as coexistence between closely related competitors, when coupled with differences in diapause phenology. From an ecological viewpoint, the mechanisms determining the number of and interactions among sympatric thelytokous lineages (or clones, see below) can be seen as a limiting case for the study of niche subdivision of coexisting species (Parker, 1979;Vrijenhoek, 1979;Hebert and Crease, 1980;Jaenike et al, 1980). We here describe long-term dynamics of clonal diversity in Swedish populations of the thelytokous spearwinged fly, Dipsa bifurcata (Fallén, 1810) (Diptera: Lonchopteridae). Specifically, we analyze the temporal fluctuations in diversity and estimate fitness values from oscillations in clone frequencies at four localities in southern Sweden over an 8-year period. We show that these changes are cyclical, synchronous among populations in the same area and correlated with seasonal changes in the environment. In a companion paper (Tomiuk et al, 2004), we present a model for the maintenance of clonal diversity through the mechanism of differential diapause among clones, utilizing fitness values estimated from the data presented here. 1. Until now 9 Lonchoptera species have been recorded in the GDR: L. tristis MEIG., L. furcata (FALL.), L. lutea Pz., L. strobli DE MEIJ., L. megerei COLL., L. fallax DE MEIJ., L. nigrociliufa DUDA, L. scutellata STEIN and L. nitidifions STROBL. 2. Large numbers of individuals and many localities exist of the following species: L. tristis, L./urcuta and L. lutea. 3. L. rristis is most abundant in August, whereas L. furcata and L. lufea have been caught especially in September and October. 4. First fully developed oocytes of L. tristis in an small number of females occur as early as June but in z 90% only between August and October. .The widely distributed L.furcato was found only to be parthenogenetic over the whole area which has been investigated. 6.A key of the known species in the GDR completes the ecofaunistic records.

Today's knowledge of worldwide species diversity of 19 families of aquatic Diptera in Continental Waters is presented. Nevertheless, we have to face for certain in most groups a restricted knowledge about distribution, ecology and systematic, particularly in the tropical environments. At the same time we realize a dramatically decline or even lack of specialists being able, having the time or the opportunity to extend or even secure the present information. The respective families with approximate numbers of aquatic species are: Blephariceridae (308), Deuterophlebiidae (14), Nyphomyiidae (7), Psychodidae (∼2.000), Scatopsidae (∼5), Tanyderidae (41), Ptychopteridae (69), Dixidae (173), Corethrellidae (97), Chaoboridae (∼50), Thaumaleidae (∼170), Ceratopogonidae (∼6.000), Stratiomyidae (∼43), Empididae (∼660), Lonchopteridae (2), Syrphidae (∼1.080), Sciomyzidae (∼190), Ephydridae (∼1.500), Muscidae (∼870). Numbers of aquatic species will surely increase with increased ecological and taxonomical efforts.
