“…A similar observation has been made for C. aspera, which inhibited strongly S. obliquus when Chara and S. obliquus were kept together, but the negative impact was lost when Chara had been removed prior to the experiment (Van Donk & Van de Bund, 2002). Van Donk & Van de Bund (2002) explained this by immediate degradation/disappearance of allelopathic substances, because the allelopathic substances from Chara are volatile (Anthoni et al, 1980) and therefore may be lost rapidly (Blindow & Hootsmans, 1991;Van Donk & Van de Bund, 2002). In the current study, a rapid removal of volatile sulphuric compounds might have occurred during the filtration step, which was included in the experimental design between phase I and II.…”

“…Allelopathically active compounds are often directed at photosynthesis (Gross, 2003) and have been extracted from Elodea canadensis (WiumAndersen, 1987), Chara globularis (Anthoni et al, 1980;Wium-Andersen et al, 1982), and Myriophyllum spicatum (Gross & Su¨tfeld, 1994). In those studies 14 C-radiotracer techniques were applied to demonstrate the allelopathy, while in the current study photosynthetic performance of Scenedesmus was distilled from F PSII measurements.…”

“…Possible mechanisms behind the toxicity and repellence to both invertebrates and vertebrates are numerous, such as membrane damaging activity or interference with catecholamine metabolism and other neural control mechanisms (reviewed by Singleton and Kratzer 1969). A chemical isolated from Chara globularis (4-methylthio-1,2-dithiolane, also named charatoxin, Anthoni et al 1980) blocks the cholinergic receptors and thus inhibits neural functions, and kills houseflies (Musca domestica) (Jacobsen and Pedersen 1983). Such compounds have, however, not been identified from M. spicatum.…”

“…Whenever this green alga occurs in a pond it dominates the algal flora of the ecosystem, apparently because 23 and 32 act as extremely active inhibitors of photosyn thesis, thus eliminating'would-be competitive species (40 Both 34 (1,2,4,6-tetrathiepane) and 35 (1,2,3,5,6-pentathiepane or lenthionine) have been isolated from both sources, while 1,2,3,4,5,6 -hexathiepane, 36, was obtained from the mushroom and 27 (1,2,4-trithiolane), 2g (1,2,4-trithiolane 4-oxide), 30 (1,2,4-trithiolane 1-oxide), 37 (1,2,4,6-tetrathiepane 4,4-dioxide) and 40 (1,2,4,5,7,8,10,11-octathiacyclododecane) 5-N,N-dimethylamino-l,2,3-trithiane, 41, (60,61.) and car tap, 42, (62) a bisthiocarbamate which is converted vn vitvo and in vivo to nereistoxin 24 (Note Figure 6 ).…”
