Biological Variations in Depression and Anxiety Between East and West

Abstract: Ethnicity and culture represent important factors in shaping psychopathology as well as pharmacotherapeutic responses in psychiatric patients. A large body of literature, accumulated over the past several decades, demonstrates that these factors not only determine the metabolism and disposition of medications (pharmacokinetics), but also their interactions with therapeutic targets (pharmacodynamics). This article focuses on the impact of such variations on the diagnosis and treatment of depression and anxiety … Show more

“…Therefore, the findings are relevant to clinical practice in Korea. In addition, conducting the study in a mostly homogeneous population overcomes any differences that may occur in the response to treatment for depression or mental illness because of ethnicity 14. However, this study is limited mainly by the large number of protocol violations, which resulted from early trial difficulties and issues with trial management.…”

“…Third, because all subjects included in this study were Korean, ethnic and racial influences should have been considered. There have been reports of racial/ethnic differences in the prevalence of depressive disorders (Simon et al, 2002), metabolic syndrome (Kramer et al, 2013), body fat distribution (Karastergiou et al, 2012), and antidepressant response (Chen et al, 2009). Fourth, we only investigated the association between treatment response and metabolic conditions; in an effort to avoid multicollinearity problems, we did not investigate the associations between the particular components and treatment responses.…”
