Biological Properties, Current Applications and Potential Therapeautic Applications of Brevinin Peptide Superfamily

Abstract: The Brevinin peptides are antimicrobial agents obtained from frog skin secretions. Brevinin-2R has attracted many attentions due to its very low hemolytic activity, cationic property, and high affinity to cancer cells. Moreover, it has shown little toxicity against normal mammalian cells, while having killed several tumor cell lines by activation of lysosome-mitochondrial death pathway. In this review, we introduced the Brevinin superfamily with a focus on its therapeutic applications. Next, some unique proper… Show more

“…The second quadrant included sequences of two AMP families derived from frog skin secretions; dermaseptins (in lime green) and brevinins (in turquoise) in addition to the four insect bactericidins or cecropin D-like peptides (APD00011, APD00032, APD00033, APD00034—orange circles). Most peptides mentioned above lacked experimental validation against red blood cells, only Brevinin-2-related peptide 63 was mentioned as a low hemolytic peptide (APD00599: consensus class probability of 0.55 and percentile outlier score of 0.23). The third quadrant contained several toad-derived maximins (i.e.…”

“…These bacteria include Candida sp., Acinetobacter baumannii strains, Escherichia coli , Klebsiella pneumonia , and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Migoń et al 2018 ; Ong et al 2021 ). The current application and potential therapeutic applications of Brevinin had been compiled in Zohrab et al ( 2019 ). Besides antimicrobial properties, Brevinin peptides also promote wound healing, stimulate insulin secretion, and cause dendritic cell maturation (Zohrab et al 2019 ).…”

“…Novel antimicrobial peptides could be considered as therapeutic agents to solve the complications caused by ongoing diseases and emerging disorders [ 28 ]. The Brevinin family is a group of peptides that have been widely studied [ 7 ] and found to exhibit antimicrobial activity, especially the brevinin-1 subfamily.…”
