Biological occupational allergy: Protein microarray for the study of laboratory animal allergy (LAA)

Abstract: BackgroundLaboratory Animal Allergy (LAA) has been considered a risk for the workers since 1989 by the NIOSH. About one third of the Laboratory Animal Workers (LAWs) can manifest symptoms to LAA as asthma, rhinitis, conjunctivitis and cutaneous reactions. The prevalence of LAA-induced clinical symptoms has been estimated with a great variability (4–44%) also due to the different methodologies applied.ObjectiveEvaluate the prevalence of IgE positivity to mouse and rat allergens in LAWs and assess which factors … Show more

“…Exposure to biocontaminants in animal facilities in USA and in the United Kingdom has received great attention [16][17][18][19] as demonstrated by the NIOSH publication in 1998 [20], where the so-called LAA (Laboratory Animal Allergy) was considered an occupational risk, and by Gordon in 2001 [21]. Various papers have been published in scientific literature both as a review [22][23][24] and experimental studies [25][26][27] while in Italy the topic of LAA is not studied carefully yet.…”

“…Laboratory animal allergy (LAA) is a relevant occupational health hazard for workers attending veterinary or research animal facilities. It was estimated that as many as 44% of personnel operating in contact with laboratory animals report symptoms related to occupational asthma or allergic rhinoconjunctivitis [ 1 , 2 ].…”
