Biological mechanisms underlying the role of physical fitness in health and resilience

Abstract: Physical fitness, achieved through regular exercise and/or spontaneous physical activity, confers resilience by inducing positive psychological and physiological benefits, blunting stress reactivity, protecting against potentially adverse behavioural and metabolic consequences of stressful events and preventing many chronic diseases. In this review, we discuss the biological mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects of physical fitness on mental and physical health. Physical fitness appears to buffer agains… Show more

“…Whilst an acute stress response (increased stress hormones, elevated heart rate, blood pressure and blood glucose) is important for rapid responses (such as mental alertness, motivation, concentration), it would seem that preventing ‗overreactivity' via quick termination of such stress responses is a key factor in adaptive resilience (Silverman & Deuster, 2014). An enhanced parasympathetic response has been shown to enhance antiinflammatory processes, which may be acutely associated with recovery adaptations to exercise.…”

“…Physical fitness has been associated with certain biological mechanisms that underlie the beneficial effects on physical and psychological health. Moreover, potential benefits to the brain may be conferred by biological mechanisms that support reduced inflammation, increased growth factor expressions, optimized neuroendocrine responses to stressors, and neuroplasticity [55].…”

“…También se ha encontrado asociación positiva entre buena condición física y resiliencia, entendida ésta como "la capacidad de resistir, recuperarse y crecer frente a los factores de estrés y las demandas cambiantes del ambiente" (Silverman & Deuster, 2014).…”
