“…Especially important, given the high NCD (particularly diabetes) rates in the Pacific and northern Australia, are the anti-diabetes and anti-cardiovascular disease effects of most of the plants featured in the factsheets, demonstrated in scientific studies. Studies with evidence for this include the following: drumstick [ 36 , 37 , 38 , 50 , 60 ], amaranth [ 61 , 62 , 63 ], bele [ 64 , 65 , 66 ], chilli [ 67 , 68 , 69 ], purslane [ 70 , 71 , 72 ], kangkong [ 73 , 74 , 75 ], ofenga [ 76 , 77 , 78 ], hedge panax [ 79 , 80 ], chaya [ 39 , 40 ], pumpkin [ 81 , 82 ], and choko [ 83 , 84 ]. Their inclusion in the diet in sufficient quantity is likely to reduce the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease, not only by reducing glycemic load when they are included with high-carbohydrate meals, but also because of specific anti-diabetes effects.…”

“…Dire et al reported that the Sechium edule extract was able to modify the biodistribution of certain metabolites in the pancreas, such as AGE (Advanced Glycation End Products), which are characterized by inducing general inflammation in addition to other anomalies related to DM. Chayote modified and inactivated these molecules in an in vivo model with Windstar rats [ 135 ]. In another work, the relation between DM and other diseases and risk factors usually present, such as obesity, fatty liver, and hypertension, originated the search for natural alternatives that could reduce one or some of these risk factors.…”

“…45 In addition to having hypotensive and anti-inflammatory capacity 46 , it reduces the health risks associated with diabetes and obesity. 47,48 In a study conducted by Pérez-Ávila (2010) in which the hypoglycemic capacity of chayote juice was evaluated in Wistar rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes, to which they were administered chayote juice diluted with drinking water in two presentations (filtered and unfiltered) finding that chayote juice diluted with unfiltered drinking water significantly decreased blood glucose concentration, in addition to presenting an increase in body weight of rats with diabetes, so the author suggests that such preparation may be a protective factor against diabetes. 49 Siahaan et al, (2017) carried out a study in which the effect of an ethanolic extract of chayote was analyzed in order to decrease the level of blood sugar, using an animal model (Mus musculus L), in which it was found that there was a significant difference with respect to the control group.…”
