Biological control of sheep parasite nematodes by nematode-trapping fungi: in vitro activity and after passage through the gastrointestinal tract

Abstract: The main method used for the control of gastrointestinal nematodes in sheep production is the application of chemotherapeutic agents, which often lead to the selection of parasites resistant to given active principles. Biological control can be considered a promising alternative, contributing to an increase in the efficacy of verminous control. We determined the in vitro activity and in situ survival of the predatory fungi Arthrobotrys musiformis and Arthrobotrys conoides during passage through the gastrointes… Show more

“…As the natural enemy of parasitic nematodes, the nematode-trapping fungi have emerged as a promising application with potential in biological control for nematode diseases in domestic animals (Mota et al 2003;Paraud and Chartier 2003;Terrill et al 2004;Graminha et al 2005;Dias et al 2007;Braga et al 2010). Under the induction of nematodes, the nematode-trapping fungi can form the structurally complex mycelia including constricting ring, adhesive net and adhesive knob.…”
