Biological behavior of the curcumin incorporated chitosan/poly(vinyl alcohol) nanofibers for biomedical applications

Abstract: Electrospun composite scaffolds show high ability to be used in regenerative medicine and drug delivery, due to the nanofibrous structure and high surface area to volume ratio. In this study, we used nanofibrous scaffolds fabricated by chitosan (CS), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), carbopol, and polycaprolactone using a dual electrospinning technique while curcumin (Cur) incorporated inside of the CS/PVA fibers. Scaffolds were fully characterized via scanning electron microscopy, water contact angle, tensile measur… Show more

“…1,7‐Bis(4‐hydroxy‐3‐methoxyphenyl)‐1,6‐heptadiene‐3,5‐dione, which is recognized as Cur or diferuloylmethane, is included as one of the primary Curcuma longa components, and the other is Curcuma spp. rhizome . According to pharmaceutical characteristics, Cur has shown to have antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antioxidant, anti‐inflammatory, anticoagulant, antiatherosclerotic, hypoglycemic and anticarcinogenesis impacts .…”

“…rhizome . According to pharmaceutical characteristics, Cur has shown to have antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antioxidant, anti‐inflammatory, anticoagulant, antiatherosclerotic, hypoglycemic and anticarcinogenesis impacts . The main restriction for Cur is poor bioavailability and bioactivity that subsequently, in neutral pH, has a poor absorbability, insolubility features, higher metabolism level, inactive metabolic products, short half‐life time in plasma and fast liver and intestine clearance .…”
