Biological and Genomic Characteristics of MaMV-DH01, a Novel Freshwater Myoviridae Cyanophage Strain

Abstract: A novel freshwater Myoviridae cyanophage strain, MaMV-DH01, was isolated; this strain infects Microcystis aeruginosa FACHB-524, and the biological and genomic characteristics of MaMV-DH01 provide new insights for understanding the mechanism by which cyanophages infect cyanobacterial blooms.

“…The disease is characterized by high fever, superficial lymphadenopathy, anemia, anorexia, lethargy, respiratory distress, and death, and Giemsa-stained blood smears showing polymorphic erythrocytes parasitized by Theileria [14,15]. In recent years, Theileria luwenshuni, Theileria uilenbergi, and Theileria ovis have been reported to infect sheep in China [16,17,18]. Anaplasma belongs to Rickettsiales Anaplasmataceae, which is an obligate and intracellular parasitic Gram-negative bacteria.…”

“…Although research on freshwater viruses is relatively limited compared to their marine counterparts, various cases of the presence of photosynthesis-related genes in the genomes of freshwater cyanophages have already been reported (Gao et al, 2012;Meng et al, 2023b;Nadel et al, 2019;Ou et al, 2015;Yoshida et al, 2008). The strain-specific double-stranded DNA lytic myovirus Ma-LMM01 infecting the toxic, bloom-forming Microcystis aeruginosa NIES-298 is arguably the most comprehensively characterized freshwater cyanophage to date (e.g., Morimoto et al, 2018;Yoshida et al, 2008;Yoshida et al, 2006).…”
