Biological and clinical implications of herbal medicine and natural products for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease

Abstract: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a group of chronic inflammatory disorders that includes Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). Homeostasis of various regulatory factors involved with intestinal immunity is disrupted in IBD, including the intestinal epithelial barrier, macrophages, and cellular mediators such as cytokines and chemokines. No successful treatment is currently available for the management of IBD. Natural products and herbal medicines have exhibited efficacy for UC and CD in experime… Show more

“…Some plant-derived compounds such as artemisinin, taxol, camptothecin are the representative examples of natural’s gifts to medicine at present. Epidemiological surveys suggest that, the majority of patients with IBD receive traditional medicines ( Kong et al, 2005 ; Guo et al, 2017 ). Some natural products such as berberine ( Habtemariam, 2016 ), sophocarpidine ( Wang et al, 2012 ), indigo naturalis ( Wang Y. et al, 2017 ), andrographolide ( Liu et al, 2014 ), and curcumin ( Sreedhar et al, 2016 ) also exhibit efficacy in treating UC.…”

“…Biological drugs, such as infliximab and adalimumab, have shown great potential as therapeutics for IBD; however, their exorbitant costs and potential for serious adverse effects limit their long-term use. Recently, much attention has been focused on the inhibitory effects of some active ingredients from natural herbs on inflammatory responses in human IBD or experimental colitis ( 2 ).…”
