Biological and biochemical characterization of 4-META/ MMA-TBB resin

Abstract: Abstract4-META/MMA-TBB resin has clinically favorable mechanical and bonding properties and undergoes unique, moisture-insensitive polymerization. To explore the potential usefulness of 4-META/ MMA-TBB resin as a pulp capping material, this study examined its biological and biochemical properties. Rat dental pulp cells were cultured on 4-META/MMA-TBB resin, resin-modified glassionomer (RMGI) cement, and a calcium hydroxide-based pulp capping material. The percentage of viable cells was considerably higher on 4… Show more

“…Several studies have shown that the cytotoxicity of a composite material depends on its monomer, photoinitiator, and inorganic-filler-particle components [ 22 , 47 ]. In any polymer-based materials, unreacted monomers have negative effects on various cells [ 10 , 12 , 13 , 16 , 17 , 28 , 33 , 48 , 49 , 50 ]. Bis-GMA and UDMA are the main components of composites, the former eluting at higher concentrations than the latter [ 51 ].…”

“…The surface layer of composite material does not polymerize when in contact with oxygen, forming an unpolymerized layer due to its polymerization mechanism [ 13 , 24 , 33 , 35 ]. We therefore compared composite material with and without the unpolymerized surface layer.…”

“…In comparison, according to Nakagawa et al, testing 4-MET in luting materials containing resin showed biocompatibility in the cells present in dental pulp [ 49 , 50 ]. Additionally, it was reported that the lower pH values may result in higher toxicity of the dental adhesives [ 51 ].…”
