Biological activity of soils under rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis) affected by trunk phloem necrosis

Abstract: Trunk phloem necrosis (TPN) is currently one of the most economically important diseases of the rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis). Investigations of the aetiology of the disorder have failed to identify any biotic causal agents but a multidisciplinary study has recently suggested that the disease may be caused by a combination of exogenous and endogenous stresses. These stresses can affect plant physiology and may also have an impact on soil biology and soil biochemistry. In this study, macrofauna diversity and… Show more

“…Environmental stressors, such as intense rainfall or flooding, have the potential to accelerate disease spread by creating favorable conditions for spore dispersal and germination. 48,49 In contrast, prolonged periods of drought have the potential to diminish the vitality of plants and render them more vulnerable to infections. 50,51 The vegetation index is an effective tool for assessing plant health in relation to Pestalotiopsis disease.…”

“…Rubber or its scientific name Hevea brasiliensis is one of the first commodity crop planted in large scale in Malaysia, besides cocoa, palm oil and tobacco (Chandrasekhar et al, 2005). Rubber trees are a major producer of natural latex (Wongcharoen, 2011). Besides, latex rubber wood can be used for furniture making and as the main raw material in the production of wood-based panels such as particleboard and medium density fiber board in Asia (Ayrimis et al, 2011), thus rubber is economically important industrial commodity (Prabhakaran, 2010;Kyrychenko, 2018).…”
