The fungus Pestalotiopsis sp. causes aberrant leaf fall, resulting in an annual reduction in rubber production. The loss of latex yield has a significant impact on the income of smallholder farmers. The objective of this study is to estimate NDVI using reflectance from the upper canopy based on Sentinel-2 NDVI time series data and daily climate data, analyze phenological changes of rubber trees using a harmonic model and time-lag cross-correlation, and develop a prediction model of vegetation indices using the random forest regressor (RFR) algorithm. The study was conducted on the rubber plantation of the Indonesian Rubber Research Institute in Sembawa, Indonesia. Three rubber clones aged 10 to 11 years were used to study the wintering trend. The study found that the overall trend of the NDVI decreased significantly from 2019 to 2022. The cycle of defoliation and refoliation changed due to disease and climate change. The time lag effects of vegetation index and climate variables are crucial for predicting vegetation dynamics. Increasing temperature and changing precipitation play significant roles in influencing pathogen incidence. The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) was used to evaluate the trend of the vegetation indices. The RFR algorithm predicts the vegetation indices with a MAPE of 6.07%, 5.96%, and 8.18% of BPM24, GT1, and RRIC 100, respectively. Our finding indicated that the analysis and prediction model can be used to understand the phenological pattern and predict the wintering pattern to prevent disease spread and minimize latex yield loss due to infestation outbreaks.

Rubber prices are influenced by several factors including supply and demand especially from countries who are major rubber producers and consumers as well the growth rate of the world economy. High rubber prices increase the incidence of rubber theft, thus forcing the owners to build hut and camp in their rubber estates to prevent such occurrence. Rubber theft becomes prevalent not only at night but also in the broad daylight as the commodity price increases. From the survey, it has been noted that more than 10 incidents of theft have been reported within 15 days. Plated Rubber System (PRESS) was developed to imprint an identification entity on rubber that leads to identifying the ownership. With the invention of this system, the stolen number of rubber can be reduced because each rubber smallholders has their personal serial identification plate. The main objective PRESS is to establish an identification of rubber, helping to reduce the theft of rubber at farm level as well as to curb the sale of stolen rubber. In addition, it can be used to regulate the quality of rubber produced by smallholders and developing a database profile of rubber smallholders. The finding shows that the respondent agreed that the innovation of PRESS may help them to reduce the prevalence of rubber theft and increase the good practice of plantation management that leads to greater efficiency and productivity.

In the Philippines, the production of rubber cup lumps has decreased in recent years. Despite the expansion of the rubber industry for environmental and economic benefits, knowledge about the productivity and income of the rubber-based farming system is minimal. Hence, this research assessed and estimated the productivity and income of farmers from the different rubber-based farming system models in Cotabato Province, Philippines, where one of the major crops is rubber. It is important to determine the productivity of rubber and how its productivity was affected by the introduction of other crops. Through this, the income of farmers and welfare were measured. This research was carried out in 2016, where rubber was among the priority crops being promoted in the area. It investigated 3 different rubber-based farming models, namely: FM1 (rubber+ banana), FM2 (rubber+ cacao), and FM3 (rubber+ coconut). The study revealed that the farmers’ income increased by engaging in intercropping compared to the monocropping system. Thus, as the income of the farmer increases, the household’s basic needs, particularly food consumption, will be attained since income does not solely depend on rubber production but also other crops grown. The result also shows that farming model 3 provides higher returns to the farmers than the other rubber-based farming models. Hence, the study is useful for the farmers to adopt different rubber-based farming systems to increase income and reduce risks from farming. This study also serves as a basis for the policymakers for future agricultural development.
