Biological activity of lipopeptides from Bacillus

Abstract: The lipopeptides of Bacillus are small metabolites that contain a cyclic structure formed by 7-10 amino acids (including 2-4 D-amino acids) and a beta-hydroxy fatty acid with 13-19 C atoms. These lipopeptides exhibit a variety of biological activities, including interactions with biofilms, and anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, anti-virus, and anti-platelet properties. The multiple activities of lipopeptides have stimulated significant interest in the exploitation of these lipopeptides for use as anti… Show more

“…Indeed, exposure of Ao strains to halotolerant bacteria caused strong changes in cell structure, resulting into the release of nutrients or nuclear materials from the cytoplasm. In agreement with the result of this study, Zhao et al (2017) recently found that bacterial cytomembrane was interrupted by different lipopeptides from Bacillus. Therefore, it could be inferred that the antibacterial ability of the 15 isolates may be, at least partially, attributed to the negative effect on cell morphology and membrane integrity by the combination of metabolites.…”

“…On the other hand, the strong in vitro inhibitory effect of halotolerant bacteria against this rice bacterial pathogen in this study supports that metabolites-associated mechanisms play important role in inhibition of Bacillus against phytopathogenic bacteria (Yoshida et al 2001;Ongena and Jacques 2008;Elshakh et al 2016;Zhao et al 2017).…”

“…Bacillus spp. have been utilized extensively as biopesticides and fungicides in animal feed (Zhao et al 2017;Mingmongkolchai et al 2017Mingmongkolchai et al , 2018. B. amyloliquefacien is a non-pathogenic aerobic gram-positive bacterium and widely exists in nature.…”

“…Bacillus species generally have characteristics to produce antimicrobial substances, mainly including lipopeptides, protease antibiotics, and bacteriocins [100]. These structurally diverse compounds exhibit a wide range of antimicrobial activity [101], especially the lipopeptides secreted by Bacillus presenting antifungal activity [102].…”
