Particulate hydroxyapatite, Ca5 (PO4)3 (OH), shows a good biocompatibility and is used as a biomimetic ingredient in dental care formulations due to its similarity to human enamel. Numerous studies show its efficiency, for example, in reducing dentin hypersensitivity, and in the remineralization of enamel and dentin. In addition, oral care products with hydroxyapatite improve periodontal health under in vivo conditions. This review article summarizes data on the effects of hydroxyapatite particles in oral biofilm management. Two databases (PubMed and SciFinder) were searched for studies using specific search terms. In contrast to frequently used antibacterial agents for biofilm control, such as chlorhexidine, stannous salts, and quaternary ammonium salts, hydroxyapatite particles in oral care products lead to a reduction in bacterial attachment to enamel surfaces in situ without having pronounced antibacterial effects or showing unwanted side effects such as tooth discoloration. Furthermore, antibacterial agents might lead to dysbiosis of the oral ecology, which was recently discussed regarding pros and cons. Remarkably, the antiadherent properties of hydroxyapatite particles are comparable to those of the gold standard in the field of oral care biofilm management, chlorhexidine in situ. Although biomimetic strategies have been less well analyzed compared with commonly used antibacterial agents in oral biofilm control, hydroxyapatite particles are a promising biomimetic alternative or supplement for oral biofilm management.

Iron preparations, of which ferrous sulphate is the most common, are utilised in a broad variety of industries across the globe. This medicine has a high risk of adverse effects, most of which are related to the digestive system, despite being effective and inexpensive. As a transferrin family member and glycoprotein, lactoferrin is one of the proteins that can bind to and transport iron. The purpose of this research was to examine the haematological response and potential adverse effects of oral ferrous sulphate and oral lactoferrin as iron supplements for the treatment of iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) in pregnant women. A total of 108 pregnant women with a diagnosis of IDA were included in this research; 54 participants from each group. Iron sulphate (Ferro sanol duodenal cap, MINAPHARM Company) and lactoferrin (Pravotin, HYGINT Company) were both given orally to one group, while the other was given lactoferrin. Both treatments lasted for 4 weeks. Pregnancy-related or preexisting maternal diseases (such as hypertension, gestational diabetes, thyroid dysfunctions, pituitary diseases, nutritional diseases, liver pathologies, and gastrointestinal disorders), foetal abnormalities (such as microcephaly, intrauterine growth restriction), and allergy to any of the given drugs (iron sulphate [Ferro sanol duodenal cap, MINAPHARM Com]; or any of the other given drugs) disqualified subjects (Pravotin, HYGINT Company). Before and after treatment, both groups were compared for differences in outcomes and side effects, such as [haemoglobin (Hb) level, serum iron, ferritin level, total iron binding capacity (TIBC)]. No significant changes were seen in baseline or post-treatment Hb level, iron, TIBC, or ferritin levels between the two groups. As an added bonus, group A had much more nausea than group B. The incidence of vomiting was much greater in group A than in group B. Group A had considerably more cases of abdominal discomfort than Group B. People in Group A had more constipation than those in Group B. The current research concludes that oral lactoferrin has less adverse effects than oral iron therapy for the treatment of IDA during pregnancy.

Helicobacter pylori is a prominent cause of gastritis, peptic ulcer, and gastric cancer. It is naturally colonized on the surface of the mucus layer and mucosal epithelial cells of the gastric sinus, surrounded not only by mucus layer with high viscosity that prevents the contact of drug molecules with bacteria but also by multitudinous gastric acid and pepsin, inactivating the antibacterial drug. With high-performance biocompatibility and biological specificity, biomaterials emerge as promising prospects closely associated with H. pylori eradication recently. Aiming to thoroughly summarize the progressing research in this field, we have screened 101 publications from the web of science database and then a bibliometric investigation was performed on the research trends of the application of biomaterials in eradicating H. pylori over the last decade utilizing VOSviewer and CiteSpace to establish the relationship between the publications, countries, institutions, authors, and most relevant topics. Keyword analysis illustrates biomaterials including nanoparticles (NPs), metallic materials, liposomes, and polymers are employed most frequently. Depending on their constituent materials and characterized structures, biomaterials exhibit diverse prospects in eradicating H. pylori regarding extending drug delivery time, avoiding drug inactivation, target response, and addressing drug resistance. Furthermore, we overviewed the challenges and forthcoming research perspective of high-performance biomaterials in H. pylori eradication based on recent studies.
