Biological Activity of Isoflavonoids from Azorella madreporica

Abstract: Four isoflavones, isolated from the whole plant of Azorella madreporica, were identified as angustone C (1), alpinumisoflavone (2), licoisoflavone A (3) and isolupalbigenin (4) by spectroscopic studies. The compounds were evaluated for antibacterial and gastroprotective activities. This is the first time that isoflavonoids have been reported in this genus.

“…IFL (OB = 45.17%) was identified and considered to be an active inhibitor against angiogenesis and a promising compound as a potential cancer chemopreventive agent [43]. LIA (OB = 41.61%) was identified for its antibacterial and gastroprotective properties [44]. At low concentrations, it inhibits MRP-mediated efflux to control MRP-like activity in human erythrocytes.…”

“…The gastroprotective activity of the diterpene 1 was evaluated in the HCl/EtOH-induced lesion model as described previously. [ 31 32 ] Mice were randomly distributed into groups of seven animals each and fasted for 12 h with free access to water prior to the experiment. Diterpenoid 1 and lansoprazole were suspended in Tween 80 (1% solution), and was administered intragastrically to mice at a dose of 20 mg/kg in a 10 ml/kg vol.…”

“…3C). This novel finding is noteworthy because some of the compounds (e.g., 79, 81, 82, 90, 93, 96) exhibit good anti-inflammatory (unpublished work in this laboratory), antitumor [38][39][40], and antibacterial [41,42] activities. Therefore, it makes sense to further investigate whether therapeutic effects of the herb pair or TCM preparations containing it would be influenced, because the precipitates are usually discarded during decocting or manufacturing.…”
