Biological activities and phenolic contents of Argania spinosa L (Sapotaceae) leaf extract

Abstract: Purpose: To investigate the phenolic profile and biological activities of Argania spinosa L. leaves. Methods: The crude methanol extract of leaves of A. spinosa L. Skeels was obtained by ultrasonic extraction, and the total polyphenolic and flavonoid contents were determined by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-quadrupole time-of-flight-mass spectrometry (UPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS). In vitro antioxidant activity was determined by 2,2-di-phenyl-1-picryl-hydrazil (DPPH) radical myreciti… Show more

“…The high antioxidant activity of ALE is most likely due to its high total phenol content (198.61 mg TYE/g DM), especially its total flavonoids content (128.41 mg CAE/g DM) represented by flavanols (59.59 mg CAE/g DM) and proanthocyanins (6.85 mg CYE/g DM). The obtained values are within the range of values reported elsewhere [ 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 ]. The total polyphenol content of argan leaves was reported to vary from 29.9 to 240 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g DM [ 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 ].…”

“…The different antibacterial activities of the two types of oils can be explained by the different amounts of the compounds responsible for the antimicrobial activity in the two oils (primarily phenolic compounds [ 48 , 49 , 50 ]). Eugenol, which increases antimicrobial and antifungal activity, is the main component (~80%) of clove oil.…”

“…According to Benabdesslem et al (2022), essential oils derived from argan leaves are rich in terpenic compounds (36 terpenic compounds have been identified), especially of cubenol (31.02%) and 1,10-di-epi-cubenol (22.50%), camphor (8.22%), viridiflorol (7.10%), linalool (5.60%), and eucalyptol (5.40%). Main properties of argan leaves essential oil and extract include antibacterial (Kabouss et al 2002;Dakiche et al 2016;Bonvicini et al 2017), antioxidant (El Idrissi et al 2021, and antihyperglycemic activity (Hebi and Eddouks 2019). In addition, argan leaves extract can potentially also be used for treatments of hypopigmentation disorders or as bioactive components of cosmetic products that aim to increase pigmentation (Bourhim et al 2021).…”
