Bioinspired Micro Glue Threads Fabricated by Liquid Bridge-to-Solidification as an Effective Sensing Platform

Abstract: Spiders synthesize their web using a liquid bridgeto-solidification mechanism at the end of their glands. Inspired by this process, in this work, we fabricated micro-glue threads (μGTs, polymer microwires) by a simple "pinch and spread" process using just two fingertips. The μGTs exhibited excellent tensile strength (∼50 GPa), comparable to those of spider silk and biological fibers. The chemical, physical, and mechanical properties of the μGTs were investigated, and it was confirmed that the thickness of the … Show more

“…Because we used the CV molecules (fluorescence dye) for investigation, the 785 nm laser is suitable for decreasing fluorescence interference. A 10× microscope lens (Leica DM2700M, DEU) and detector (Renishaw Centrus Detector, GBR) were used for analysis [1,29].…”

“…structures are proposed to solve the problems. 25,26 The fibrous webs endow air filtration materials with interconnected fibers, small pores, and thin thickness, which greatly improves efficiency and permeability. Generally, different kinds of technologies have been presented to develop filters based on fibrous web-like structures.…”

“…Moreover, waterproof paint from the lotus leaf effect, artificial fibers from the spider silk, adhesive surface from the gecko foot surface, and adhesive materials in water from mussels are famous examples of bio-inspired technology [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 ]. As a part of biomimetic technology, we previously developed an artificial microfiber that mimicked a spider’s web and nano pine pollen that mimicked pine pollen [ 10 , 11 ]. Through previous works, we recognized that the biomimicked nanostructure has advantages in the SERS sensing platform especially.…”
