Bioinformatics-based investigation on the genetic influence between SARS-CoV-2 infections and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) diseases, and drug repurposing

Abstract: Some recent studies showed that severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infections and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) disease might stimulate each other through the shared genes. Therefore, in this study, an attempt was made to explore common genomic biomarkers for SARS-CoV-2 infections and IPF disease highlighting their functions, pathways, regulators and associated drug molecules. At first, we identified 32 statistically significant common differentially expressed genes (cDEGs) betw… Show more

“…In terms of gene ontology, the molecular function (MF) class describes the activities of the gene product, and the cellular component (CC) refers to where the gene product is active. The biological process (BP) refers to the pathways and processes to which the gene product's activity contributes [17]. Pathway maps sourced from NDEx Query were initially compiled based on the published literature.…”

“…11,27 Rapa is currently one of the most studied and promising drugs for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). 28 Furthermore, it is included among the repurposed non-oncology drugs (RNODs) for inhaled therapy against lung cancer due to cell proliferation suppression by inhibition of the mTORC1 pathway. 7…”

“…One such study used network-enabled DR for pulmonary fibrosis. Through the measurement of proximity between the drug targets and the signature within the interactome, we have identified numerous potential candidates and furnished a ranked drug list based on their closeness …”
