Bioimpedance Analysis (BIA) in Hemodialysis: Technical Aspects

Abstract: Phase-sensitive impedance analysis in association with anthropometric parameters provides adequate body composition estimates in nephropathic subjects, with complex three-compartment modelling as a reference. Extracellular fluid shifts can be detected during ultrafiltration by phase sensitive impedance analyzers. Rough impedance parameters such as Reactance and Phase Angle have been normalized with large series of data collected from reference populations and a bioelectric nomogram, termed Biagram, is proposed… Show more

“…The relation between Xc and PA seems to be useful for evaluating the nutritional status in terms of ECM/BCM, without being affected by anthropometric characteristics of the subject [7,[25][26][27][28]. Xc is the dielectric component due to the additional opposition to the current flow from the presence of capacitance, produced by the effect of cell membranes, tissue interfaces and nonionic tissues; thus Xc appears related to body cell mass.…”

“…Florence, Italy) [10][11][12] was used to measure the variation of resistance between t 0 and t 1 (%), which expresses conductor opposition to the fl ow of alternate currents, and is inversely proportional to total body fl uids, and the variation in capacitive reactance between t 0 and t 1 (%), which expresses condenser opposition to the fl ow of alternating current, and is directly proportional to cellular mass.…”

“…Essa condição por sua vez, conduz a alterações da integridade das membranas celulares e, consequentemente, da distribuição dos fluidos corporais. Sendo assim, aumento da água extracelular (AEC), redução da concentração intracelular de potássio e aumento correspondente da concentração de sódio são considerados indicadores de desnutrição [24][25][26][27] .…”
