Biohydrogen production from biomass and industrial wastes by dark fermentation

Abstract: Hydrogen is a clean energy carrier which has a great potential to be an alternative fuel. Abundant biomass from various industries could be a source for biohydrogen production where combination of waste treatment and energy production would be an advantage. This article summarizes the dark fermentative biohydrogen production from biomass. Types of potential biomass that could be the source for biohydrogen generation such as food and starch-based wastes, cellulosic materials, dairy wastes, palm oil mill effluen… Show more

“…Lignocellulosic biomass, which primarily contains wood, grass, weed, agricultural by products or crops, is an ideal inexpensive, renewable and abundant resource for hydrogen production (Chong et al 2009;Nissila et al 2014). Direct fermentation of raw lignocellulose is typically inefficient.…”

“…The key issue in using hydrogen is associated with production and storage costs [1]. In fact, current production methods have low efficiencies and are not economically feasible in satisfying the current and future needs of hydrogenbased energy as a substitute for fossil fuels [2].…”

“…In fact, biological processes for hydrogen production are promising techniques because they offer low production costs and better energy gains compared with chemical-based processes. Additionally, organic residuals and waste water can be used as raw materials [1,3,7].…”

“…8 O processo fermentativo permite ainda a utilização de diferentes tipos de resíduos como substrato, tais como materiais lignocelulósicos, glicerina, resíduos alimentícios e lácteos, entre outros. 35 Neste contexto, a produção de hidrogênio via fermentação anaeróbia apresenta-se como uma alternativa muito interessante de um ponto de vista técnico e ambiental.…”
