Biohybrid fluorescent nanodiamonds as dual‐contrast markers for light and electron microscopies

Abstract: Cathodoluminescence (CL) and correlative light‐electron microscopy (CLEM) are two useful analytical tools in diverse research areas. Recently, fluorescent nanodiamonds (FNDs) have emerged as promising imaging agents for both CL and CLEM owing to their exceptional photophysical and chemical properties. However, to realize their practical applications in the life sciences, surface modification and functionalization of the nanomaterials with bioactive molecules are critical and essential. Here we provide a compre… Show more

“…Different techniques available for the development of graft copolymer synthesis differ basically in the mechanism used for generating free radical sites on the backbone polymer. [48,49] The developed substance was checked for magnetization by setting a magnet outside the glass vessel in which the developed substance is stored (Figure 1). The developed substances were attracted to the magnet, and accordingly, they were separated from the mixture within 30 seconds, with a clear solution left behind.…”

“…Moreover, the platform is perfectly compatible with superresolution fluorescence imaging, cathodoluminescence imaging, and correlative light-electron microscopy by use of FNDs as photostable contrast agents and fiducial markers. 28,46,47 Further advancement of the technology is expected to facilitate diverse applications of these novel multifunctional nanoparticles in theranostics, nanomedicine, and related areas.…”

“…In contrast to Qdots, no blinking is observed. Modification of the surface is also relatively easy (Sotoma et al, 2018); e.g., Tsai et al successfully used this advantage to attach gold nanorods as tiny heat sources onto the surface of nanodiamonds to probe the local temperature at the heated dot (Tsai et al, 2017). Biocompatibility has been shown to be good.…”
