Nano-sized metals have been introduced as a promising solution for microbial resistance to antimicrobial agents. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been proven to possess good antimicrobial activity. Green synthesis of AgNPs has been reported as safe, low cost and ecofriendly. This methodology uses extracts originating from different plants to reduce silver ions from AgNO 3 into nano-sized particles. In this study, extracts of several plants including ginger, garlic, capsicum and their mixtures were successfully used to produce AgNPs. Numerous spectroscopic, light scattering and microscopic techniques were employed to characterize the synthesized AgNPs. Agar well diffusion assay was performed to investigate the antimicrobial activity of AgNPs. The biosynthesized AgNPs have spherical shape with a size range of 20-70 nm. Garlic extract, pure or in mixture with ginger extract, generated AgNPs of the smallest size. The presence of the plant-origin capping agents surrounding AgNPs was proven by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The AgNPs, at a concentration of 50 µg/mL, demonstrated potent antimicrobial activity against Staphyloccocus aureus, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans as indicated by the zones of inhibitions. Our results revealed that AgNPs having potent antimicrobial activity could be prepared using different pure plant extracts and their mixtures.

Antibiofilm activity of green synthesized silver nanoparticles against biofilm associated enterococcal urinary pathogens

Biofilm-formed enterococcal urinary tract clinical isolates (n = 92) were used for studying the antibiofilm activity of cinnamon, ginger, and chemical AgNPs. The average particle sizes of cinnamon, ginger, and chemical AgNPs were 8.7, 41.98, and 55.7 nm, respectively. The results of Fourier transform infrared analysis revealed that phytocompounds, such as cinnamaldehyde and gingerol, were the main compounds incorporated in the synthesis of cinnamon and ginger AgNPs, respectively. The purity and crystalline nature of the AgNPs have been confirmed by energy dispersive X-ray and X-ray Diffraction analysis. The results of antimicrobial activity showed that MIC of ginger, cinnamon, and chemical AgNPs were 37.64, 725.7, and 61.08 μg/ml, respectively. On studying the antibiofilm activity of AgNPs at sub-MIC values (1/2, 1/4, and 1/8 MIC), the results revealed that it was concentration dependent. Therefore, further studies were carried out to evaluate the antibiofilm activity of AgNPs at a concentration of 18 μg/ml. The results showed that ginger and chemical AgNPs reduced the formed biofilm to 39.14% and 65.32% and the number of adherent cells on the urinary catheter surface to 42.73% and 69.84%, respectively, as compared to that of the control, while cinnamon AgNPs showed no significant activity. Accordingly, ginger AgNPs had the most potent antibacterial and antiadherent activity against biofilm-associated enterococcal isolates.

the chemical and physical methods for nanoparticle production are relatively expensive and complicated, let alone their toxicity for the ecosystem. On the contrary, using ginger to reduce metal ions into nanoparticles is a more easier and rapid technique, as ginger contains reducing agents; e.g., alkaloids, and phenolic compounds. We synthesized Silver, Copper and Nickel nanoparticles using ginger extract and characterized them by Transmission Electron micrograph, X-ray diffraction, and UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Different concentrations of Silver, Copper and Nickel nanoparticles (100, 200, 300, 400,500 mg/ml) were tested on some chemicals and the microbial content of two water samples [(Brackish lake (Mariout), El Kilo 21 lake)] Alexandria. We concluded that the addition of 100 μl of copper, 50 μl of silver, and 150 μl of Nickel nanoparticles / 50 ml of the water sample removed the total content of nitrate and phosphate efficiently, whereas 30 μl of copper, 30 μl of silver and 75 μl of Nickel nanoparticle / 50 ml of the water sample totally inhibited bacterial contamination. This demonstrates that the preparation of Silver, Copper and Nickel nanoparticles using ginger extract is a safe, easy and economic technique, in addition to being effective in water decontamination and environmental applications.
