Biogenic Potassium Salt Particles as Seeds for Secondary Organic Aerosol in the Amazon

Abstract: Salty Origins of Fresh Water Cloud droplets above the Amazonian rain forest form mostly around organic aerosols, but the source of the aerosols has been a mystery. Pöhlker et al. (p. 1075 ) report that particles rich in potassium salts emitted by Amazonian vegetation can act as the seeds for the growth of organic aerosol particles that function as condensation nuclei for water droplets. These specks… Show more

“…Potential inter-site differences can be seen in this figure: the ATTO sample shows large inorganic inclusions coated by organics along with Na, Mg, and Cl representing the bulk of the higher Z elements. The particles present at ATTO also often look like either inorganic aerosols from biomass burning events or small biogenic K salt particles (due to the KCl or NaCl inorganic cores), or secondary organics, with a few particles appearing to be sea spray [56][57][58]. The ZF2 sample has a consistent circular morphology with appreciable mixing between the three carbon species.…”

“…This cluster also contains the highest number of particles with collocated Na and S, which has been previously shown to suggest biogenic particles [69]. The HDOrg cluster also contains an appreciable amount of K and, given that one sample was taken at night, could include biological particles derived from fungal spores [58].…”

“…9, a large fraction of TMAcontaining particles (74 %) are additionally composed of biomass burning tracers such as potassium (67 %) and levoglucosan (7 %). According to Pöhlker et al (2012), this internal mixture can be explained by potassium-containing particles acting as seeds for the condensation of organic material. Thus, the measured particulate TMA can be considered a secondary component that condensed on pre-existing primary particles.…”
