“…The groups (treatments 1-3) of cores were used for three separate N-loss incubation assays (Jahangir et al 2012). Briefly, the base of each core was leveled out avoiding smearing and all vegetation was removed, so that the corer and soil fit exactly inside cylindrical incubation vessels in a specialized incubation chamber (Cardenas et al 2003;Jahangir et al 2012). The vessels were sealed to exclude atmospheric N 2 , preincubated at 15°C and purged from the bottom with a He/O 2 mixture (80:20) for 24 h (known as the flow-through method with a flow rate of 20 ml min −1 ) to replace most of the original atmosphere, and then for another 72 h across the headspace in flow-over mode at 10 ml min −1 to remove the remaining N 2 (Cardenas et al 2003;Jahangir et al 2012).…”

“…For real-time N-loss analysis, temporal N 2 and N 2 O evolution was measured using dedicated gas chromatographs as described by Jahangir et al (2012) in an automated incubation system ( Fig. 1; Cardenas et al 2003;Scholefield et al 1997a;Scholefield et al 1997b) at Rothamsted Research, North Wyke, Devon, UK. Sampling times for microbial analysis were chosen to reflect nitrogenous emissions; therefore, sampling times changed according to the behavior in the emission signal.…”

“…In agriculture, one of the major pathways of manure N loss to the environment are gaseous emission of ammonia (NH 3 ) (Webb et al, 2005), N 2 O (Chadwick et al, 2011), N 2 (Cardenas et al, 2003), and the leaching of nitrate through soil . After NH 3 is volatilized, it combines with other chemicals in the atmosphere to form particulates that can adversely affect human health (Erisman et al, 2007).…”
