“…This pattern is consistent with a negative relationship between productivity and diversity, where the very low productivity during ice-rafting events , Thomas et al 1995, van Kreveld et al 1996; but see Sancetta 1992, Hinrichs et al 2001 positively affected species diversity. This increased diversity during Heinrich events might therefore be explained because the low food-supply prevents any one species from becoming dominant.…”

“…In fact, this reversed pattern of low glacial productivity and high interglacial productivity is observed at several highlatitude North Atlantic sites including the Rockall Plateau (Thomas et al 1995, van Kreveld et al 1996, Rasmussen et al 2002. In the next section, we present the hypothesis that ice-rafting during glacial periods explains the reversed trend in high-latitude regions.…”

“…This study compares biomarker distributions with more conventional sedimentological climate proxies from a single core, using the same sampling intervals. We chose piston core T88-9P with a 208 ka sediment record, recovered from the midlatitude Northeast Atlantic (48023'32" N, 25005'06" W, 3193 m water depth) (Figure 1) because it has been intensively investigated sedimentologically [van Kreveld et al, 1996; van Kreveld, 1996]. Thus the aim of this work is to intercorrelate specific organic compounds (biomarkers), õ180_ based and microfossil-based proxies for terrigenous input and SST, and to closely examine differences in the paleoclimatic signals recorded by these independent parameters.…”
