Biogas Upgrading and Ammonia Recovery from Livestock Manure Digestates in a Combined Electromethanogenic Biocathode—Hydrophobic Membrane System

Abstract: Anaerobic digestion process can be improved in combination with bioelectrochemical systems in order to recover energy and resources from digestates. An electromethanogenic microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) coupled to an ammonia recovery system based on hydrophobic membranes (ARS-HM) has been developed in order to recover ammonia, reduce organic matter content and upgrade biogas from digested pig slurry. A lab-scale dual-chamber MEC was equipped with a cation exchange membrane (CEM) and ARS with a hydrophobic m… Show more

“…The hydrogenotrophic methanogens were the major leading species in the microbial population (Bo et al 2014). Hence, the in situ hydrogen production by using the bioelectrochemical system could boost hydrogenotrophic methanogens' activity, thus altering the microbial dominance (Cerrillo et al 2021;Gao et al 2021).…”

“…The ammonium ions in LFD can also be transformed to the gaseous phases such as hydrogen, ammonia, and N 2 O through hydrolysis, stripping, and Nitrification-denitrification process respectively, for further utilization as an energy source [ 211 ]. For recovery of ammonia and biogas (up-gradation) from the wastewater digestates of high strength, a hydrophobic membrane-based ammonia recovery system link coupled with an electromethanogenic microbial electrolysis cell has been reported [ 212 ].…”

“…The LCA analysis shows a simple payback (SPB) of 3.78 years and in internal rate of return (IRR) of 22%. Cerrillo et al [114] studied the methane production by means of an electromethanogenic Microbial Electrolysis Cell (MEC), which allows the conversion of CO 2 into CH 4 . Furthermore, this system allows the recovery of ammonia since the MEC is coupled with a Cation Exchange Membrane (CEM) and an Ammonia Recovery System based on Hydrophobic Membrane (ARS-HM).…”
