Biogas plants site selection integrating Multicriteria Decision Aid methods and GIS techniques: A case study in a Portuguese region

Abstract: This work addresses the problem of determining the most suitable sites for locating biogas plants using dairy manure as feedstock, specifically in the Entre-Douro-e-Minho Region in Portugal. A Multicriteria Spatial Decision Support System is developed to tackle this complex multicriteria decision-making problem, involving constraints and many environmental, economic, safety, and social factors. The approach followed combines the use of a Geographic Information System (GIS) to manage and process spatial informa… Show more

“…But later, it was extended to sorting problems with more than three categories. The ELECTRE-TRI approach studied in this paper is based on the method proposed in Roy (1996), which has been applied in several real problems in different fields (Arondel and Girardin 2000;Brito et al 2010;Cailloux et al 2013;Cloquell-Ballester et al 2007;Sánchez-Lozano et al 2014;Silva et al 2014;Xidonas et al 2009). Since the appearance of new ELECTRE methods for sorting problems, the original ELECTRE-TRI method was renamed as ELECTRE-TRI-B, in which B stands for boundaries.…”

“…The spatiality is explicit in site selection problems. Selecting sites for a new industry [15], for specific agricultural land use [16], solar farms [17], a biogas plant [18], or a new park [19], are some examples. In these studies, GIS-MCDA proved useful for selecting suitable sites.…”
