“…Therefore, we performed three cycles of fouling/cleaning experiments to evaluate the biofouling reversibility of the pristine polysulfone and GO-functionalized membranes. Each cycle comprised a biofouling step for 2 h followed by a physical cleaning step for 15 min at a crossflow velocity of 11.1 cm s –1 , which is in accordance with the typical operation of UF systems. The water flux decline during biofouling and the flux recovery after cleaning are shown in Figure . During the 2 h biofouling for each cycle, a moderate flux decline was observed for the GO-coated membrane, while the pristine and GO-blended membranes showed a rapid decrease in water flux.…”

“…In addition, the high FRR of the GO-coated membrane suggests good mechanical stability of the grafted GO under the rinsing conditions employed. Compared to the suggested backwash interval of 20–60 min in real UF systems, our GO-coated membrane displayed high cleaning reversibility even in 2 h biofouling tests.…”

“…Each cycle included a 1.5 h precompaction with 10 mM PBS (pH 7.4), a 1.5 h filtration of 1 g/L BSA solution in PBS, and a 20 min backwashing with PBS, resembling typical UF operation systems. 36 During precompaction and filtration, the operating pressure was set at 30 psi by nitrogen gas, and the temperature was maintained at 25 °C. The initial and final permeate fluxes (J 0 and J BSA , respectively) were recorded at the beginning and end of the filtration step.…”

“…Este proceso no es nuevo; existen registros desde la antigüedad (WHOI, 1952). Las pérdidas económicas globales debido a la bioincrustación marina fueron de quince mil millones de dólares en 2001 (Azis, et al, 2001). Esto incluye el costo de su prevención, el mantenimiento de la infraestructura (biocorrosión, aumento de peso y obstrucción), y el consumo de combustible (Schultz, et al, 2011).…”
