Biofilms in chronic rhinosinusitis: systematic review and suggestions for future research

Abstract: It is unlikely that biofilms occur in every case of chronic rhinosinusitis; consequently, the significance of 'biofilm detection' in some series should be considered carefully. Several authors have argued strongly for the use of confocal scanning laser microscopy with fluorescent in situ hybridisation probes as the 'gold standard' for biofilm imaging. This imaging modality should be combined with further investigation of the microbiology of chronic rhinosinusitis, and of the efficacy of traditional culture tec… Show more

“…The discrepancy may be attributed to different detection methods, as well as the influence of impact factors of BBF. Thus, a study with elegant design is required for a definite conclusion [24]. In this study, we found BBF in 16/27 (59.26%) CRS patients and none in 10 controls using BacLight/CSLM detection.…”

“…13-15 Biofilms occur frequently, but not always, in patients with CRS but also occur in healthy subjects. The most robust detection techniques require electron microscopy or fluorescent in situ hybridization.…”

“…Around 90 % of adults have had some symptoms of sinusitis at some time. There is a growing appreciation that chronic rhinosinusitis is typifi ed by biofi lm growth (Foreman et al 2011 ;Keir et al 2011 ;Ebbens et al 2009a ). While there is increasing evidence for the role of bacterial biofi lms in this infection, there role of fungi remains controversial (Ebbens et al 2009b ).…”
