Biofilm synthesis and presence of virulence factors among enterococci isolated from patients and water samples

Abstract: The goal of this study was to compare biofilm synthesis among enterococci recovered from clinical samples (infection or colonization) of patients as well as environmental samples in order to determine possible virulence factors and clonal relationship. During a two-year period, clinical samples (blood, catheter tips, bronchial secretions, wounds, peritoneal fluid, urine) and rectal swabs collected from hospitalized patients as well as environmental water samples were tested for the presence of Enterococcus fae… Show more

“…striatum strains may have evolved the ability to form robust biofilms under specific circumstances. This hypothesis might be supported by previous studies demonstrating that the increased level of biofilm formation was associated with the infection status and not strain clonality in Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcal disease [ 36 , 37 ]. In contrast to our finding, Souza et al .…”

“…Using 0.5% seemed reasonable. Likewise, we consistently performed the assays after 48 hours incubation based on prior reports 28, 29 ; this consistency was important to guarantee that the incubation time would not be a confounding factor.…”

“…The esp gene was de ned as characteristic to hospital strains and claimed to be greatly correlated to the capability of the isolates to cause health-care associated infection [36]. The importance of the presence of esp and ace genes in the bio lm synthesis process was highlighted by the results of a study conducted by Papadimitriou, et al, 2015 [37]. In the present study, 97.7% of the isolates had esp gene, while 17.7% of them were contained the ace gene.…”
