“…This technique involves training patients to sense bowel distension and respond by contracting their abdominal muscles to close the stoma. 8 Success rates using these techniques are variable, and none of them is able to provide complete stomal continence. [6][7][8] Surgical modifications of intestinal stoma techniques designed to create continence are numerous.…”

[6][7][8] Surgical modifications of intestinal stoma techniques designed to create continence are numerous. Kock et al 9 developed an intestinal nipple valve using an intussuscepted segment of bowel interposed between an intra-abdominal intestinal reservoir and the stoma.…”

“…[1][2][3][4][5] Although numerous surgical procedures 6,7 and nonsurgical devices 8 -11 have been invented in an effort to attain durable stomal continence, to date there are no reliable methods available to control the episodic flow of stomal feces. [12][13][14] An area of investigation that holds great promise for providing individuals with stomal continence is the dynamic myoplasty, 15 which takes advantage of electrically stimulated muscle to perform taskspecific functions.…”

“…Colostomies render the patient incontinent because of the loss of a competent sphincter mechanism. Human surgeons have sought techniques to control the free flow of feces through the stoma by using “continent” colostomy devices, such as a disposable stomal plug or magnet activated stomal closures 6–11 . The majority of these devices have been tested in dogs 6–11 …”
