This article introduces a novel and effective diagram based on direct instantaneous power control (DPC) of a PWM-controlled rectifier connected to the grid without a switching table. An optimum control vector of the PWM rectifier's input voltage, which depends on the switching states determined by a Petri nets controller, is adopted. This approach limits the instantaneous detection errors of reactive and active powers, maintains the DC bus voltage at a reference level, and ensures current close to a sinusoidal wave, guaranteeing operation at a unit power factor. The instantaneous tracking errors of active and reactive powers and the angular position of the voltage are used as input variables for the proposed controller, which then selects the best control vector for the converter based on the transition of a Petri net. The significant advantages of DPC based on Petri nets compared to traditional switching tables are that hysteresis comparators are not required, and the classical regulation of active and reactive powers is achieved in all sectors. Simulation and testing findings demonstrated excellent performance, supporting the viability of the suggested control approach using Petri nets.

Abstract-Hemofiltration (HF) is a group of blood purification therapies used to treat patients with kidney injury. HF works using a process called ultrafiltration (UF) that removes excess liquid accumulated in the patient's body caused by lack of excretion. UF progress is monitored by the HF machine, but the state-of-the-art method is cumbersome and could be more accurate. In this work, a system composed by two optical sensors is proposed for real-time non-invasive estimation of ultrafiltration rate. This new system is simple, rugged, low-cost and operates on sound theoretical foundations. The sensor system has been tested with two different experimental protocols and showed good correlation between its output and the reference value of the ultrafiltration rate (R 2 =0.97), as well as improved accuracy compared to the available commercial machine (≃12ml/h). This system also has the potential to simplify the architecture required by critical care blood purification machines to perform UF control.Index Terms -Biomedical Measurement, Blood, Blood Purification, Hemofiltration, Hemoglobin, Measurement, Optical Sensor, Ultrafiltration I. Intradialytic hypotension (IDH) still represents the main complication during dialysis treatment. Patient’s discomfort, reduced dialysis efficiency, reduced treatment time are only some of the main problems that could derive from the need to stop or temporarily interrupt the treatment because of IDH. Up to now, different types of treatment (HDF, HF, or AFB) have been considered to prevent IDH as well as the use of biofeedback systems (Blood Volume Monitoring, Temperature control, Sodium profiling, Blood Pressure monitoring). Recently a new biofeedback system (Biologic Fusion®) controlling simultaneously blood pressure (BP) and relative blood volume changes (RBV) has been developed to prevent IDH. This system runs according to fuzzy logic. We describe how this system works and to a better understanding, we report a clinical case of a patient with frequent IDH treated with the use of this system.
