Abstract

Biofeedback in Chronic Headache This article gives an overview on the latest developments in research concerning the use of biofeedback with patients suffering from chronic headache. Biofeedback attempts to directly influence pathophysiological processes which underlie the headache symptoms as well as the specific psychophysiological reactions of these patients. First, the pathophysiological models of the development of tension headache and migraine, which are discussed at the moment, are presented. Second, the findings of individual-specific reactions of patients with chronic headache are assessed and compared to the partially divergent results of biofeedback research. The article ends with an analysis of the effectiveness of biofeedback for tension headache and migraine patients and summarizes the results of the research on applied biofeedback therapy in patients with chronic headache.
