“…Metabolic changes in T cells influence immune functions in human diseases: in HIV patients, it was shown that high levels of immune activation and markers of inflammation, correlated with Glut-1 overexpression and the increased glycolytic metabolism in CD4 + T cells [48]. In the same cells of Multiple Sclerosis first diagnosis patients, we found an increase in glycolytic pathway associated with a decrease in OXPHOS activity: in particular, we found a decrease in the activities of mitochondrial complex I and IV and a parallel increase in the activity of complex III, suggesting a defect in mitochondrial function [7]. The impairment of mitochondrial respiration efficiency resulted also in decreased RCR values, which are a measure of the tightness of coupling between electron transport and oxidative phosphorylation.…”
