Bioenergetics Evaluation of the Fish Community in the Western Arm of Lake Superior in 2004

Abstract: Lake Superior's fish community continues to change as a result of the recovery of populations of lake trout Salvelinus namaycush, the naturalization of introduced salmonids Oncorhynchus spp. and Salmo spp., declines in the populations of rainbow smelt Osmerus mordax, and the fluctuating recruitment of cisco Coregonus artedi. This study used bioenergetics modeling of the dominant predator fish in the western arm of Lake Superior in 2004 to provide a comprehensive picture of the relationship between predator dem… Show more

“…Similarly, naturalization of chinook salmon has also been documented in the other Laurentian Great Lakes. In fact, the contribution of stocked fish in Minnesota waters was so low that stocking was discontinued after 2006 (Schreiner et al 2006;Negus et al 2008).…”

“…The question of whether prey fish resources are sufficient to support current levels of predators in the western arm has been the focus of much study and debate in recent years (Negus, 1995;Johnson et al, 2004;Mason et al, 2005;Negus et al, 2008). The recently completed study by Negus et al (2008) concluded that fish predators in the western arm are currently at or near carrying capacity.…”

“…The recently completed study by Negus et al (2008) concluded that fish predators in the western arm are currently at or near carrying capacity. When we compared our summer 2006 estimates of total fish biomass with the 1997 estimates reported by Mason et al (2005) we found only minor differences.…”

“…The numbers of lake trout stocked as marked fry that survived to each age were estimated by applying mortality rates generated from statistical catch-at-age models for wild lake trout in Minnesota waters of Lake Superior in 2004, in each of three management zones (Negus et al, 2007). An initial stocking mortality for fry was unavailable, so the 91% stocking mortality estimated for yearlings was applied.…”
