“…The use of buffers is another way to maintain suitable values of pH in both compartments (Li et al 2013b;Vologni et al 2013;Fan et al 2007aFan et al , 2007bMin et al 2008;Qiang et al 2011;Nam et al 2010;Torres et al 2008;Fornero et al 2010a;Ahn & Logan, 2013). The buffers affect MFC performance due to their chemical composition and interaction with electrodes, bacteria, and membrane.…”

“…In order to avoid some of these problems and to ensure a continuous feed of a buffer at a low cost, the addition of acid buffers to the cathode compartment in the form of carbon dioxide (Torres et al 2008;Fornero et al 2010a) and the use of saline solutions in both compartments have been studied (Ahn & Logan, 2013;Li et al 2013b). The use of saline solutions, such as sodium chloride, was found to be an effective way to control pH and lead to an increase of the solution conductivity, a decrease of the internal resistance and an increase of the power density (Ahn & Logan, 2013;Li et al 2013b). These species can migrate to the anode compartment as hydroxide ion carriers at a rate much higher than the hydroxide ions themselves and act as buffers on this compartment.…”

“…In most of the study, they used neutral or little alkaline pH values (6–9) in the anode chamber. It is because of controlling anodic medium close to the neutral pH condition would allow the electroactive biofilm to function better . Behera and Ghagrekar , Behera et al .…”

“…In most of the study, they used neutral or little alkaline pH values (6)(7)(8)(9) in the anode chamber. It is because of controlling anodic medium close to the neutral pH condition would allow the electroactive biofilm to function better [15,19]. Behera and Ghagrekar [22], Behera et al [23], and Yuan et al [24] suggested that most anode-attached bacteria favor the alkaline pH conditions because of effective extracellular electron transfer and electrogenic bacterial growth.…”

“…For those MFCs fed with brewery wastewater, extra adding salts like NaCl is an effective way to increase performance. (Li et al, 2013b;Liu et al, 2005a)…”
