This study developed and evaluated the toxicological effects of new stable nanoemulsions (NEs) of peppermint essential oils (EOs) and palmarosa EO + linalyl acetate (LA) using ultrasound cavitation. Moreover, the study analyzed the effect of LA in the stabilization process of palmarosa NEs. Peppermint NEs had sizes of 34 nm and polydispersity index (PDI) values of 0.424, whereas palmarosa NEs showed sizes of 15 nm and a PDI of 0.078. Peppermint NEs were stable for 30 days and palmarosa NEs for 120 days. The insecticidal effect of NEs was also evaluated against Cx p. pipiens and Plodia interpunctella larvae. In Culex pipiens pipiens, the LC 50 values were 31.24 ppm for peppermint NEs and 32.30 ppm for palmarosa + LA NEs. In P. interpunctella, the NEs were combined with βcypermethrin and the LC 50 values were 0.12 μg larvae −1 for peppermint NEs and 0.23 μg larvae −1 palmarosa + LA NEs. In addition, the NEs showed no toxicity effect in nontarget organisms such as Artemia salina and Tenebrio molitor. Finally, viability on mammalian cell culture models was evaluated and it was also observed that NEs did not affect the cell viability after 3 and 7 days of exposure.

A laboratory assessment of desiccation tolerance in larval stages of mosquitoes Anopheles stephensi Liston, 1901 (Diptera: Culicidae) and Culex quinquefasciatus Say, 1823 (Diptera: Culicidae) was carried out using five temperature levels and three levels of exposure duration as explanatory variables. The increase in the duration of exposure to desiccation from 15 min to 60 min was noted to result in a substantial increase in water loss (in mg) in mosquito larvae. Similarly, the increase in temperature levels was observed to cause larval mortality and a substantial decrease in the emergence of adults. Both the temperature and the duration of exposure to desiccation were found to be influential factors in determining survival and subsequent emergence of adults. Desiccation is a primary factor in determining the survival of mosquito larvae, particularly in the conditions where habitat permanence is uncertain, e.g., in temporary pools and containers serving as mosquito larval habitats. The results of the present study provide a glimpse into the effects of desiccation at varied temperatures and exposure durations on the successful emergence of adults in mosquitoes Cx. quinquefasciatus and An. stephensi. Although primary, the obtained results show that desiccation can be a probable way of regulating the development of mosquito larvae in conditions where the permanence of the habitat for mosquito larvae is uncertain. Further studies on desiccation tolerance may be carried out using different mosquito species that are adapted to temporary pools and containers as sources for breeding.

Climatic variables like temperature, rainfall and humidity play an important role in dynamics of mosquitoes. But the effect of climate change during urbanization on Anopheles mosquitoes has not been studied. The objective of present study was to explore the effects through the changes in climate variables of urbanizing Ghaziabad District, India on malaria vector Anopheles sp., particularly Anopheles stephensi (Liston) and An. culicifacies sensu lato (Diptera: Culicidae). The study was conducted in urban, rural and peri-urban parts seasonally from April 2014 to October 2016. Association between climate variables, malaria and Anopheles abundance was studied through Pearson's correlation and Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Results showed that pollution in water bodies and low rainfall has decreased the abundance of An. culicifacies s.l in rural and peri-urban whereas An. stephensi L has increased in rural areas. In urban and peri-urban areas rainfall has lesser influence on An. stephensi hence species breeds throughout the year easily whereas the humidity supports both the vectors. The role of temperature was found to be uncertain, although minimum temperature found to influence vector density as indicated by cluster analysis in the present study.
